Purpose of Job:
Provides oversight of the School Health department, under the guidance of the Director of ESS, through process development, supervisory duties, and compliance monitoring.

Collaboration and Coordination:
- Acts as a substitute school nurse when staff are on PTO or when department is short-staffed.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with students, parents, and community.
- Communicates confidentially and effectively with students, parents, and staff about student health issues.
- Exhibits good communication and collaboration with staff, administration, and colleagues.
- Works with administration to maintain best practice guidelines for school health.
- Manages and oversees the school health needs for GOAL Venture trips, field trips, prom nights, graduations, and other events across the state not conducted during normal school hours.
Compliance:
- Organizes and oversees the annual calibration of GOAL’s statewide audiometer inventory.
- Ensures statewide compliance with vision and hearing screenings as mandated by the Colorado Department of Education.
- Facilitates and monitors procedures for managing the outbreak of communicable diseases in the school environment.
- Oversees the annual review of health intake information and HCP development.
- Participates in the creation of procedures and policies needed to successfully operate the school health department.
- Department Budget Responsibilities:
- Submits purchase order requests to the Director of ESS for school health department needs.
- Assists the Director of ESS in creating budget proposals for the school health department as required and directed by GOAL’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
- Obtains quotes and vendor packets from supply companies as requested by the Director of ESS.
- Manages and maintains accurate records of department spending.
- District and State Reporting:
- Collects, disaggregates, and sends the immunization records report to GOAL leadership, its authorizing district, and the state department of education.
- Assists the ESS Coordinator, the GE & 504 Specialists, and other GOAL staff in reporting student accommodations per individual Health Care Plans for state testing administration.
- Works directly with the authorizing district’s lead nurse to provide reports as needed.
- Software and Programs:
- Manages student information system data regarding all health-related information.
- Collaborates with GOAL’s technology department to ensure data platforms and systems are accurate, compliant, and properly utilized and accessible.
- Manages statewide HCP tracking.
- Manages statewide vision and hearing tracking.
- Manages statewide immunization tracking.
- Trains school nurses for compliant use of relevant software and platforms.
- Organizes and oversees the annual calibration of GOAL’s statewide audiometer inventory.
- Maintains and updates the health web page with school health policies.
- Supervises School Nurses:
- Vets, interviews, hires, and trains new school nurses.
- Collaborates with the Director of ESS when support or disciplinary steps are needed.
- Manages, reviews, and approves PTO requests.
- Processes conference request forms and post-conference reports of school nurses.
- Ensures school nurses are creating and maintaining up to date individual Health Care Plans (HCP).
- Leads school nurses in overseeing and managing CPR/First Aid training for all GOAL employees who require certification.
- Observes and evaluates school nurses in their training of GOAL staff on health-related issues.
- Observes and evaluates school nurses in their training of GOAL staff on medication administration / nursing tasks.
- Observes and evaluates school nurses in their delegation to GOAL staff of nursing tasks and medication administration as indicated for students with HCPs.
- Confirms school nurses: coordinate student Individual Education Program (IEP) health services, writing health assessments and accommodations for Initial and reevaluation IEPs.
- Ensures school nurses participate in IEP meetings for students with academically significant health concerns.

Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing plus additional coursework required for certification or licensure.
- Possession of a valid Colorado Registered Nursing License required.
- Possession of a Professional Special Services License through Colorado Department of Education required.
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years’ experience as a school nurse required.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience as a nurse in an online school required.
- Previous experience as a supervising nurse preferred.
