The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) located in Cleveland, Ohio, is searching for an entry-level Rail Mechanic within the Operations Division.
Detailed Description
DUTIES: Works under the technical direction of a Grade 5 Equipment Maintainer in the repair of electrical and mechanical rail equipment; will perform one or more of the following functions: conduct rail inspections, diagnose and repair electrical rail equipment, rebuild rail equipment parts, repair body damage on rail cars, inspect and repair air conditioning and heating systems; the incumbent in this position can be assigned to any of these duties according to need, and can be reassigned to a different functional area and/or shift at any time. This position will promote a safe and secure atmosphere, follow all safety and security rules and perform other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have successfully completed technical courses covering mechanical and/or electrical principles and practices taken at the high school or post-high school level, or must have at least two (2) years experience in vehicle or heavy equipment maintenance and repair. A high School Diploma or GED is required. Applicants must have a valid Ohio Driver license with four (4) points or less in the last three (3) years Bilingual abilities are a plus.
Successful candidates will be expected to pass a background check and post-offer physical that is job related and consistent with business necessity.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and stand for prolonged periods of time. The employee is frequently required to bend, stoop, climb, reach with hands and arms, handle or feel, see with normal visual acuity, talk speak and hear. The employee is required to lift materials up to 50 lbs, and work with electrical materials. The employee is regularly required to monitor a video display monitor.
Mental Demands:
Reading, watching, studying, observing, focused listening. Concentrated attention to detail for prolonged periods of time. Auditing, inspecting, tabulating data, proof reading, analyzing
Examination Information: The examination process will consist of: a written examination, performance assessment, and eligibility certification (internal applicants only). Candidates must pass the written and performance exams ( with a minimum of 70% for each test). Candidates will become eligible based on the composite scores of all exams (minimum of 70% overall). Weights for a final score will be assigned as follows for
internal candidates: Written/online test 50%, Performance test 35%, Record Evaluation 15% . For
external candidates, weights for a final score are: Written/online test 50%, Performance Test 50%. In accordance with the Merit System Rules, internal candidates who become eligible will be given preference over external candidates.
Internal candidates must meet all record evaluation criteria in order to gain the 15% weighting. Records evaluation information includes a review of the following:
5 or more absence occurrences
2 or more AWOL or absence control suspensions
3 or more active written reminders (regardless of the level)
5 or more misses (regardless of whether they are active or not active)
4 or more active tardies
Drug or alcohol suspension
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) suspension
Active Decision Making Leave (DML)
