As a Principal Software Engineer on the Azure Storage team, you’ll work on varied tasks and projects. The primary focus for this role will be part of the engingeering team that owns several tools/applications for managing azure storages massive server fleet. We are looking for someone to drive standards, lead architecture and improve velocity. We are part of a massive distributed system so you will need expertise in debugging complex multi-system issues as well as identifying ways to continuously scale.

Responsibilities

  • Leads efforts to identify key partners and maintains communication with key partners across the Microsoft ecosystem of engineers. Acts as a key contact for leadership to ensure alignment with partners' expectations. Builds partner teams across Microsoft (e.g., Xbox, Office) and their end-goals for products to drive and achieve desirable user experiences and fitting dynamic needs of partners/customers through product development. Escalates situations internally to resolve complex blockers.
  • Leads by example and mentors others to create, implement, optimize, debug, refactor, and reuse code to establish and improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI).
  • Leverages subject-matter expertise of product features and partners with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project managers) to drive a workgroup's project plans, release plans, and work items.
  • Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and guides other engineers by developing and following the playbook, working on-call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions, alerting stakeholders about status and initiates actions to restore system/product/service for simple and complex problems when appropriate.
  • Applies, extrapolates, and identifies best practices and shares information with other engineers to reliably build code that is based on well-established methods while also applying best practices for new code development. Demonstrates and maintains an up-to-date understanding of both global and local regulations for technologies and system applications to ensure regulations are followed and met.
  • Leads efforts and discussions for the architecture of aspects of products/solutions (e.g., design, cost). Creates proposals for architecture and design documents, and leads testing of hypotheses and proposed solutions.
  • Proactively seeks new knowledge and adapts to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of cloud services development experience
  • 3+ years of debugging ability across technology stacks

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred/Additional Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of computer science, algorithms, and design patterns
  • Solid engineering fundamentals
  • Experience with cloud server hardware and its management
  • Proven record of shipping high quality software
  • Developing roadmaps and driving cross team planning and efforts
  • Ability to quickly produce elegant and easily understood diagrams, prototypes, wireframes, and other artifacts
  • Good experience in service-oriented architecture
  • Experience implementing distributed cloud-based applications with large data backends
  • Fundamentals for developing secure and resilient apps/services
Additional Content:

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
