In Life and Annuities, we develop strategies for the creation, enhancement, and maintenance of a robust suite of life insurance and annuity products. We are seeking an Associate Director to lead complex analyses of liabilities and risks to ensure adequate pricing and overall financial strength of Sentry’s L&A products. In this role, you will participate in the development of short-term and long-range strategies for the business in underwriting, product, and pricing.

What You’ll Do


The Associate Director of Product, Pricing and Underwriting will help to steer and support the strategies and objectives for Sentry’s L&A products.

Additionally, you will:

  • Lead a team that analyses product line financials to ensure financial strength including actuarial aspects of product development and product maintenance for all individual life and annuity products, determination of pricing structure and premiums, commission structure, systems specifications, and other actuarial supports for product management.

  • Develop projection models for premium, policy counts, expenses, losses, etc. to forecast financial results for individual life and annuity products.

  • Analyze rate making assumptions to monitor product performance compared to expected and to develop pricing rate levels that are competitive yet adequate to produce a desired profit.

  • Apply tactical, strategic, and innovative analysis to evaluate costs, benefits, and risks of various business options to achieve profitability and premium growth. Coordinate and communicate product and rate recommendations and support documentation with executive management to facilitate the decision process.

  • Provide leadership and direction to our underwriting team by overseeing the development, interpretation, and evaluation of life underwriting policies, guidelines, standards, processes, and procedures which support the growth and profitability of our product lines.

  • Direct monitoring and auditing practices to assure adherence to established underwriting policy, processes, procedures, and guidelines. Establish and maintain appropriate exception procedures.

  • Guide the life insurance application and issuance team to assure adherence with accepted business protocol and compliance with regulatory requirements.

What it Takes

  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent work experience.

    • Emphasis in Math, Actuarial, Statistics, or Economics.

  • 8+ years of related work experience.

  • Fellow of the Society of Actuaries.

  • Strong financial and analytical skills. Advanced knowledge of life insurance and annuity products; including pricing, compliance, as well as medical terminology.

  • Proficient skill level in actuarial areas of statistical analysis/assumption setting used for rate making, loss reserving and forecasting.

  • Knowledge and experience at a proficient level to successfully handle the underwriting decisions made by this position.

  • Analytical ability to identify, evaluate and develop procedures for specific problem resolution.

  • Ability to manage complex assignments to completion with limited guidance that meet the objectives of the assignment and align with the priorities outlined by management.

  • Excellent human relations and communication skills.
