Environmental justice is the principle that all people and communities are entitled to equal protection and equal enforcement of environmental laws and regulations and have a right to equitable treatment and meaningful involvement concerning policy and regulatory development, implementation, and enforcement that has the potential to impact the environmental conditions of their community.

This position is located at the Department of Administration State Office Building, 101 East Wilson Street, Madison, WI. This position currently has the flexibility to work remotely. Additional time in the office may be required depending on training and operational needs. Remote work flexibility will be discussed in more detail during the interview process.

Position Summary


The Director of the Office of Environmental Justice serves as a principal advisor to the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of the Department of Administration concerning environmental justice policies and initiatives. The Director oversees the work of the Office of Environmental Justice, including collaboration with other state agencies, communities, and other stakeholders in support of the mission of the office. Salary Information


Starting hourly rate for the Policy Initiatives Advisor – Administrative career executive position (schedule/range 81-02) will be $39.00 per hour ($81,120 annually) - $48.87 per hour ($101,649 annually) depending on qualifications and experience, plus excellent benefits. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan. A two-year career executive trial period will be required.

Job Details


This position will require frequent in-state travel for conferences, trainings, and meetings.

Due to the nature of the position, DOA will conduct background checks on applicants prior to selection. DOA does not sponsor work visas. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States, and to complete the required employment eligibility form.


Qualifications


Minimally qualified applicants will have experience with each of the following:

  • Developing or implementing a policy or program initiative (e.g., planning, budgeting, project management, team coordination, data analysis and outcome evaluation, etc.).
  • Policy advocacy or community organizing.
  • Researching, interpreting, and applying laws, regulations, policies, procedures, or other complex documents.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective and collaborative relationships with a diverse group of internal and external stake holders.

In addition, well-qualified applicants will have experience with one or more of the following:

  • Public engagement including hosting listening sessions, engaging one-on-one with individuals, and attending group meetings to hear concerns, etc.
  • Working with environmental justice policies and programs.
  • Serving in a leadership role (e.g., providing guidance and direction, training, change management, team motivation and empowerment, etc.).
  • Condensing and summarizing information to present key evidence for stakeholders and policy makers.
